The new phrase on the technology landscape is ‘digital labour’. Hardly ever spoken about just a year or two ago, it is now rapidly becoming an agenda-topping issue as organisations try to understand what it means for their business.
Digital labour encompasses a spectrum of game-changing technologies – from ‘swivel chair’ robotic process automation tools through to cognitive technologies that incorporate natural language processing, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Digital labour can draft procurement contracts, cleanse data, issue purchase orders, gather information and provide the intelligence that enables category managers to have much better-informed discussions with their suppliers.
But with the technology being so new and evolving rapidly, what should procurement professionals do to ensure their functions and their companies are not left behind? The common advice is, don’t wait: start trying it out and get valuable experience. “You learn by doing it,” says one leading CPO.
