It’s tempting to think every science fiction film that involves artificial intelligence (AI) is now coming to life. More often than not, the AI in blockbusters turns bad and needs to be switched off by a human. Or it become so advanced it acquires human-like emotions, creating moral dilemmas for the supposed real-human masters.

Hollywood isn’t coming to procurement. Not yet, at least. But the ability of cognitive technologies to see, hear, read, search, collate, analyse, summarise, present and – above all – learn – is going to be transformational. The speed at which large amounts of data can be sifted for useful insight is astonishing. It will all look uncannily like ‘understanding’.

Cognitive procurement technology has been described as a ‘smart colleague’. Treat it well: don’t ask it to take its turn making the coffee.
